Interior Design Construction Documents: What's in a Full Set and Who on Your Team Can Actually Produce Them

A complete drawing set is more than a floor plan with a furniture layout — and not every "designer" in the industry has the background to take a project from concept through a buildable set.

Most interior design clients — and a fair number of designers — assume "construction documents" means a floor plan and maybe a few elevations. In practice, that's a fraction of what a complete set requires, and the gap between what people think they're getting and what's actually needed is exactly where projects go sideways.
This is where interior architecture comes in, and it's worth separating that from interior design before going further. The architect of record is responsible for the building's shell — the structural envelope, exterior walls, and core. Interior architecture works within that shell: non-structural walls, millwork, ceilings, finishes, and built-in components like fireplaces, bookcases, kitchens, and bathrooms, and how the interior space is actually constructed and detailed, as opposed to how a room is furnished and styled. Many interior design firms split into two departments along this line: a furnishings team handling FF&E, sourcing, and styling, and a separate IA team handling the construction side. The IA side of that split often comes from people who've worked in architecture firms or hold an architecture degree — backgrounds that bring an understanding of other disciplines like MEP and HVAC, and the cross-discipline coordination a project needs to actually get built correctly.
That coordination is the real point of a thorough drawing set. The goal is for a contractor to have a clear, fully worked-out plan and specs to build from — not a set of decisions left open for them to make in the field. When a set is incomplete, the contractor ends up troubleshooting on site, or worse, makes design calls that were never addressed on paper. That's how a kitchen counter ends up with the wrong edge profile, you find a material transition that doesn't line up, or you end up with change orders nobody wanted.
Here's what's actually supposed to be in a full set, and what to look for in anyone you bring in to produce it.
The sheets to be included in a full set of interior design construction documents:
A complete plan set goes well beyond a furniture layout. These should include (but are not limited to):
Plans:
Demolition Plans — Where occurs. Typically renovation projects especially large full-gut renovations require demolition plans to document what needs to be removed and what should stay and how the contractor should handle this process.
IA Construction Plans — This is in effect the master plan. It is where the overall interior construction elements are dimensioned, millwork and built-ins are shown and noted, elevation tags live here, EP spaces are bubbled and all construction related notes are keynoted.
Floor Finish Plans — Document flooring materials by drawing them in plan view and tagging with their associated finish spec tag - showing what goes where and how they should be laid out (wood plank direction, tile layouts etc.), these are also where flooring detail call-outs live for transitions, thresholds & other detailed information.
Electrical Plans — Interior Design drawings typically include a level of proposed electrical work. these drawings denote convenience outlets and proposed electrical for specified items such as kitchen appliances or floor lamp locations and more. They are typically coordinated and layered with either existing conditions (for a renovation) or with the electrical engineers drawings for a new build project. These may also include switching, outlet mounting heights and orientation, or even spec tags for specialty outlets or cover plates specified by the designer.
Reflected Ceiling Plans (RCP) — Ceiling plans show everything on the ceiling, including architectural elements such as beams, headers, soffits and more, as well as the ceiling design (perhaps a coffered ceiling, or dropped decorative soffit with cove up lighting for example), lighting layouts (decorative + architectural), the finish or ceiling treatments, and also dashed in elements below that should be coordinated (such as upper cabinets or furniture groupings intended to be directly below a decorative fixture). These plans are often coordinated with the AOR, electrical engineer or lighting designer to ensure adequate light levels and code requirements are met.
Furniture Plans — The classic "Interior Design" plans. These show all furnishings including tables, seating, area rugs, lighting, etc. all drawn to scale and placed in their intended location and orientation, to ensure everything fits properly and so these items can be coordinated with other sheets and their specialty elements as required.
Enlarged Plans (EP) — Enlarging specific areas of a plan is ideal for small spaces with a high level of detail such as bathrooms or a kitchen. On the overall IA construction sheet we bubble these spaces and key to their enlarged plan sheets where that space is shown at a larger scale and there is appropriate space to capture the level of detail and required notes, tags and dimensions.

Interior Elevations:
Typically all walls throughout the areas in scope should be elevated. Often some designers try to cut corners to save time by only showing some elevations, however we believe that elevating all, even if they end up remaining just a blank rectangle, having them all, organized on sheets by room, is best practice. Elevations should show everything going on that wall, from wall base and crown molding to electrical outlets and switching to hardwired lighting, built-ins, cabinetry, tile layouts, doors and door casing, windows and everything else including anything from an adjacent wall that impacts this wall (such as a wall-to-wall bookcase on an adjacent wall that abuts this wall - you'll want to show a block out of the bookcase section and where it fits on this wall to ensure no conflicts occur).
Interior elevations are also often very helpful in coordination with the furnishings package - for art layouts, drapery, where a chandelier will show in elevation (ex: centered over a kitchen island), and built-ins that are coordinated with loose furnishings (such as banquette seating for a dining nook). Elevations are also thoroughly notated and dimensioned. This is where finish, fixture & equipment tags live - showing what goes where and tagged with the corresponding spec codes on the spec schedule sheets. Elevations are also where detail callouts and section markers live (ex: section cuts through millwork for example) are tagged with their detail sheet reference tag.
Note: As the drawings develop they get more and more detailed and information gets layered and then cross referenced. If something changes in one view you must go back and update it across all views to ensure everything is shown and coordinated accurately.

Interior Details:
Details are enlarged, technical drawings that zoom in on a specific condition — a profile, connection, or finish transition — at a scale large enough to show exactly how it goes together. They tell the tradesperson building the piece exactly how to construct and install it: how a cabinetry joint is detailed, how one finish material transitions into another, how trim terminates. Important design elements need to be thought through and documented this way rather than left for the builder to figure out on site — that's the only way to make sure the finished result actually matches the design intent, instead of becoming a field decision made without the designer in the room.
These may include but are not limited to:
Standard Details seen throughout: wall base profile, crown molding profile, door and window casing profiles, standard floor threshold transitions and more.
Millwork sections: a drawing that cuts through cabinetry or built-ins showing how everything is connected and what's intended to go inside (i.e. behind the elevation / ex: a pull-out trash drawer below your counter, or utensil drawer with integrated dividers, or multiple shelves within upper cabinets). At a section through a kitchen counter with upper and lower cabinets for example, you will also see if there is lighting intended to be incorporated below the upper cabinets, how the countertop and backsplash transition and are intended to be constructed with the cabinetry as well as smaller details that may get enlarged yet again such as the countertop edge profiles or reveal details where the cabinet meets the ceiling or crown molding.
Finish transitions — where one material meets another, and how that joint is resolved
Door Schedules: We refer to these as schedules but it's actually a sheet that belongs with the details and ironically they aren't details, they are enlarged elevations for the door types. These show the door style, dimensions and call out finishes and any other associated specs such as hardware and they may also have detail tags referencing things like the associated door casing.

Specifications Schedules:
There are multiple sets of specs and all are often provided in multiple ways. First there is the furnishing package which is a separate spec booklet with furnishing specs however those ideally would also receive tags / codes such as Seating (SE), Casegoods (CG), and plug-in decorative lighting (LI) so they can be tagged accordingly in the floor finish plan (super handy for installers to have this sheet on hand on install day!).
Then there are the IA specs - i.e. anything that will need to be touched, installed or coordinated with construction. These specs we like to include in spec schedule sheets within the drawing set so they are right there with everything else for the contractor to reference, price, and order from. A spec schedule is typically set up as a chart listing the Item, Product Name, Manufacturer Name, Manufacturer Code, Size, Finish, as well as a website link and contact information if there is a product representative to order from. In addition to this there may also be a spec book (8.5x11) provided to go along with the drawings and this would include the product cut sheets, finish samples to reference, shop drawings and more.
Example Schedules:
Finish Schedules: Paint (PT), Wood (WD), Tile (TI), Stone (ST), Carpet (CPT), and more as needed.
Fixture Schedules: Plumbing Fixtures (PF), Decorative Hardwired Lighting (LF), Built-in accessories such as towel bars and toilet paper holders (AC)
Equipment Schedules (Appliances + Misc. such as AV or Mechanical etc.)
Specs all need to be accurate, coordinated with the drawings, and usable by a contractor pulling pricing. Specs without drawings are a wish list. Drawings without specs are incomplete.
Each of these drawing types or sheets come with its own set of detailed content, notes, tags, and dimensions — the appropriate content needs to show clearly on its own sheet, not get folded into another one for convenience. Producing a set like this takes more than knowing AutoCAD; it takes the senior-level experience and background knowledge to know what belongs on each sheet, how the sheets coordinate with each other, and what a contractor actually needs to see to build without guessing.
This is where the difference between a drafter and an interior architect becomes clear. A drafter can typically execute lines on a page when told exactly what to draw. An interior architect knows what needs to be drawn in the first place — which details matter for a given condition, what's missing, and where a sheet falls short of what construction actually requires. A designer who can only produce one or two of these plans, with partial knowledge of what should be included, isn't equipped to carry the set to completion.
Consultant coordination
A full Interior Design or Interior Architectural set doesn't exist in isolation. It typically needs to be coordinated with the AOR, MEP, HVAC, and other specialties — reflected ceiling plans need to align with architectural lighting layouts and HVAC vent locations + perhaps even AV speakers. Electrical plans need to coordinate with either existing conditions or the engineer's plans and specs. The list of disciplines to coordinate depends on the overall scope and complexity of the project, and again, if you're looking for the right person to deliver these drawings you want someone who knows what needs to be included and who things should be coordinated with. Each specialty has a ton of unique knowledge about their specific trade, and these items should all be cross coordinated. Without previous exposure to this kind of cross-discipline coordination, it's easy to miss what questions need to be asked, and when.
Why this matters for who you hire
Plenty of talented designers can source furniture, build a beautiful presentation, and never have touched a millwork section in their career — and that's not a knock on them, it's just not where their experience lies. The reverse happens too: someone produces a technically complete set with no real sense of how the space should feel.
What's harder to find is someone who's actually carried projects through both sides — concept through a fully coordinated, buildable set — because that range comes from experience working across both disciplines, not a credential. Plenty of people who call themselves "designers" can talk through a floor plan but flail once a project moves into elevations, details, and consultant coordination — not because they're being dishonest about what they can do, but because they've genuinely never had to build a set under those conditions before.
If your team's drawings are coming back from contractors with a stack of RFIs, the gap usually isn't effort. It's scope and experience. The fix is bringing in someone who has actually produced full sets before, not just the pretty pictures seen in a design presentation.
